Curiosity to Craft: Writing Beyond What You Know

Join authors Hiroko Yoda (Eight Million Ways to Happiness) and her husband Matt Alt (Pure Invention) for a writers’ workshop on moving beyond “write what you know” toward a deeper, more curious practice.

Drawing from their books on Japan and Japanese culture, Hiroko and Matt will examine how familiarity can become a starting point—not a limitation—by asking what you don’t yet understand about what you know well.
Through examples, discussion and guided exercises, participants will learn how to follow curiosity, avoid getting lost in the weeds, and keep readers firmly in mind.
